Here are some things I bet you didn’t know about the California roll. It was not made in California or Japan it was instead said to have derived from a Japanese chef in Canada. The roll is actually inside out compared to the typical sushi roll which is made with the seaweed on the outside instead of the inside. It’s made this way because it was more appealing to the people back in the 1960’s. Interesting isn’t it? This is probably my favorite roll ever. There’s something about the seaweed, avocado, and cucumber all together that makes it so refreshing. Growing up I haven’t always liked sushi, I think it was the flavor of seaweed and the texture of raw fish that turned me walking in the other direction. One day the weirdest thing happened, I woke up with a massive sushi craving. You know how you get bizarre cravings when your body needs something? Well this was happening to me. I went to the store that day and grabbed a California roll because the crab was cooked and the rest of the ingredients were ones that I ate often. It was the best sushi ever I kid you not.
I have never tried to make sushi because the thought of making it myself intimidates me. But today I was craving a California roll and instead of buying one or making one myself I decided to throw all of the ingredients in a bowl. I’ve seen this done on Pinterest and every creative concoction they come up with is drool worthy. I almost want the bowl instead of the roll because it seems like you get much more food and you can add as many toppings as you want since you don’t have to worry about fitting everything inside a nori sheet. Another thing I love about these bowls is that they’re super beginner friendly. You can get away with a lot more imperfection in a bowl than a roll. You don’t have to worry about perfect sushi rice or your sushi rolls falling apart. It’s also tedious work.
I’ve put together this bowl and I decided against adding the crab. I did this for two reasons, the first reason is because real crab is expensive and I don’t know about you but I am a college student and my budget is tight! The second reason is because imitation crab on its own is just weird. Haha, I mean it tastes great when it’s wrapped in the rice because you can’t really see it but it’s just too perfect and eating it in a bowl like this would freak me out especially knowing that it’s not really crab. This is such a healthy meal, perfect for lunch and you’ll feel like you’re eating a California roll. I’m eager to start making sushi bowls or even learning how to roll sushi but I’ll save that for another post. Enjoy!
½ cucumber chopped
½ avocado cubed
1 Nori Sheet
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
A drizzle of soy sauce to taste (get vegan if desired)
Wasabi if desired
½ cup brown rice
Cook the rice according to the directions on the bag
Cut the Nori sheet with scissors into strips or cubes (your preference)
When the rice is done cooking place that into the bottom of the bowl and add the rest of the ingredients
If you’re adding wasabi take as much as you’d like and put it in a small bowl with a little soy sauce, whisk it around until it’s homogenous and then pour it over the ingredients
Toss to combine and serve cold or at room temp like real sushi
